At American Excess Insurance, membership means more than a way in.

We bring together experts in health system risk management to assess current trends and plan for the future. Member representatives and the staff of American Excess Insurance share their knowledge and expertise to help in decision-making, preparation and management.

American Excess Insurance is an organization focused on the success of each member, knowing that every win benefits the whole and every loss stings. The group collectively underwrites risk and covers claims. When costs are contained, members protect and grow their investments.

Through education and collaboration, health care systems and their professional representatives are strengthened. Relationships are built and reinforced. Members talk to one another individually and in groups, building a network of reliable resources that are available on short notice.

Health care systems face complex and ever-changing challenges. American Excess Insurance equips health care systems to prepare for and respond to circumstances that extend beyond daily issues. Together, we remain strong.

Our corporate structure

American Excess Insurance, RRG is a Vermont-licensed, reciprocal risk retention group (RRG) which provides coverage and consulting services to its members. As a reciprocal, policyholders (insured members) of American Excess Insurance own and govern the company. American Excess Insurance contracts with Premier Insurance Management Services for management of the reciprocal RRG.

Governance is managed by an executive board of directors and two sub-committees. The executive board (SAC) is comprised of CEOs and executive officers from the member systems. American Excess Insurance has two advisory sub-committees: the Finance Advisory Committee (FAC) and the Insurance Advisory Committee (IAC). These committees oversee and make decisions on many aspects including strategic planning, investment portfolio, policy management and future quality initiatives. Ownership provides financial equity and continued control of self-insurance strategies. It also fosters an environment of operational transparency and long-term partnership.

American Excess Insurance represents more than 200 hospitals (including children specialty hospital medical centers), more than 3,400 facilities (including 70+ reference labs), and more than 15,000 employed physicians nationwide. Members share the benefits of wise risk management in the form of distributions and rally around members to pay high-severity claims. Success is driven through collaboration and shared best practices in safety, operations, finance and other critical functions.
